In early modern England, almost all writing paper came from somewhere else. This talk shares work-in-progress findings relating to the variety of papermaking efforts and projects beginning in the 1580s, as entrepreneurs tried to create a new market for domestic writing paper and profit from the trade in imported paper. I’ll focus on the reach and impact of paper produced by the jeweler to Queen Elizabeth, John Spilman, who brought in German papermakers to operate a converted mill and was granted a patent for the exclusive production of white writing paper in 1589.
